Meta Description

The summary text shown under the title in search results. Influences clicks, not rankings.

A meta description is the short text summary shown beneath a page title in Google search results. It is typically 140-160 characters and appears in the grey text under the blue title link. Families searching for care will read meta descriptions when deciding which result to click. A well-written description that matches their search intent produces a higher click-through rate than a vague or generic one.

Meta descriptions are separate from direct ranking factors, as Google refrains from using them to determine page position. However, they significantly affect click-through rate, which reflects the proportion of people who see your result and choose to click it. A higher click-through rate sends a positive engagement signal and can indirectly contribute to ranking over time. More directly, a compelling meta description brings more qualified visitors to your site for the same ranking position.

Google will sometimes override your meta description and display a different excerpt from the page if it judges that excerpt to be more relevant to the specific query. This is common for broadly worded pages that cover multiple topics. For pages that are tightly focused on a single topic and have a well-written meta description, Google typically displays the provided description.

For care home pages, effective meta descriptions are specific rather than generic. 'Expert SEO for UK residential care homes. Carehome.co.uk ranking, Map Pack optimisation, and schema markup. Free audit.' is more effective than 'We help care homes with their online presence.' The description should name the specific service, the specific audience, and the specific action available, while staying within 160 characters so it avoids being truncated in search results.
